About BBL BroadBand Light

Sciton’s BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy is a breakthrough in non-invasive skin rejuvenation. The “BroadBand” in BBL refers to its exceptionally wide wavelength range compared to traditional pulsed light devices. While other pulsed light treatments use limited portions of the light spectrum, BBL accesses a significantly broader range, allowing your provider to address more diverse skin concerns with a single device.

BBL can be used on virtually all areas of the body, making it one of the most flexible and comprehensive skin rejuvenation options available. Whether your concern is the visible signs of aging, sun damage, rosacea, active acne, or skin texture and tone, Sciton BBL offers a clinically backed, comfortable, and time-efficient solution.

How BBL BroadBand Light Works

BBL delivers precisely controlled pulses of high-intensity broad-spectrum light through the surface of the skin. Different wavelengths of light are selectively absorbed by specific targets in the skin, allowing our clinicians to direct the light energy to address your exact concern without harming surrounding tissue.

When absorbed, the light energy converts to heat, selectively destroying unwanted pigment, collapsing visible blood vessels, and triggering the skin’s natural wound-healing cascade. This stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, leading to progressively firmer, clearer, and more radiant skin over the weeks following treatment.

What to Expect With a BBL Treatment

Before Treatment — Preparation

All makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products are removed and the skin is cleansed prior to treatment. Protective eyewear is provided. A cool conductive gel may be applied to the treatment area to enhance comfort and light transmission.

During Treatment — Comfort

Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a light rubber band flick. Sciton BBL HEROic™ features built-in sapphire CoolComfort™ cooling, which continuously protects and cools the skin surface throughout. Topical numbing cream is available upon request for those who prefer it.

Session Length — Treatment Time

A full facial BBL session typically takes 30-45 minutes. Body areas may take longer depending on the size of the treatment zone. BBL HEROic’s advanced technology allows it to cover large areas significantly faster than older IPL devices.

Recovery — Downtime

Sciton BBL requires minimal downtime. Your skin may appear slightly pink or flushed for a few hours after treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. Pigmented spots may temporarily darken and gradually shed over 7 to 10 days. Most patients return to their normal activities the same day. Sun protection is essential following treatment.

Outcomes — Results

Many patients notice an immediate improvement in skin radiance and clarity. Deeper changes, including collagen remodelling and the fading of pigmented spots, develop progressively over 4 to 8 weeks following each session. For optimal outcomes, we typically recommend a course of 3 to 5 treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance schedule tailored to your skin goals.

BBL Therapy FAQ

Sciton BBL BroadBand Light therapy effectively treats a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Sun Damage & Age Spots: Brown spots, freckles, solar lentigines
  • Rosacea & Facial Redness: Diffuse redness, flushing, skin tone irregularity
  • Visible Blood Vessels: Telangiectasia, spider veins, cherry angiomas
  • Uneven Pigmentation: Dyschromia, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Active Acne: Inflammatory acne, breakouts, acne scarring
  • Signs of Skin Aging: Fine lines, loss of radiance, uneven texture
  • Skin Laxity: Mild sagging, collagen loss on face, neck, and body
  • Poikiloderma: Sun-related redness and pigmentation on neck and chest

BBL can safely and effectively treat most skin types and be performed on most areas of the body, including the face, neck, décolletage & chest, hands, arms, back, legs.

How many BBL treatments will I need?

Every patient’s skin and goals are unique, so your treatment plan will be personalised during your consultation. As a general guide, most patients seeking photo-rejuvenation see optimal results with 3 to 5 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Acne treatments may be scheduled more frequently. For ongoing skin health and anti-aging maintenance, many patients schedule annual or semi-annual BBL sessions once their initial course is complete.

Is BBL painful?

The most common description from patients is a warm snapping sensation, similar to the flick of a light rubber band. Sciton BBL incorporates CoolComfort sapphire crystal cooling, which continuously cools the skin’s surface throughout the procedure, making it significantly more comfortable than older IPL devices. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable. For those with a lower comfort threshold, topical numbing cream can be applied prior to the session upon request.

What is the downtime after a BBL treatment?

Sciton BBL requires minimal downtime, which is one of its key advantages over more aggressive resurfacing procedures. Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear pink or lightly flushed, similar to a mild sunburn, which typically fades within a few hours to a day. Pigmented spots that were targeted during your treatment will often appear slightly darker in the days following. This is a normal part of the healing process as treated melanin rises to the skin’s surface before gradually shedding over 7 to 10 days, revealing clearer skin underneath. The majority of patients return to their regular activities on the same day as their treatment.

What makes BBL different from standard IPL?

While both standard IPL and Sciton BBL use broad-spectrum pulsed light, the technologies are meaningfully different in their sophistication and outcomes. The “BroadBand” in BBL refers to its exceptionally wide wavelength range compared to traditional pulsed light devices.
